IRS Launches Paperless Processing Initiative

This week, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced the launch of the Paperless Processing Initiative. By filing season 2024, taxpayers will be able to digitally submit all correspondence, non-tax forms, and notice responses to IRS. IRS estimates more than 94 percent of individual taxpayers will no longer need to send mail to IRS.

By filing season 2025, IRS expects to digitally process 100 percent of tax and information returns submitted by paper, as well as half of all paper correspondence, non-tax forms, and notice responses. IRS will also digitize historical documents that are currently in storage.
